Texas D league Management LLC has officially purchased the Colorado 14Er's , and will be relocating the team to Frisco, TX for the 2010-2011 season. A city that already has the Frisco Rough Riders, Texas Tornadoes, and the FC Dallas Soccer team. This city will be put on the map as a minor league city for spectators all over the world.
The Team is co-owned by Donnie Nelson and Evan Wyly, and will be coached by Nancy Lieberman. Spud Webb will be the head of basketball operations, and Del Harris will be the General Manager, who presently took a GM job for the struggling New Jersey Nets.
The team name, color and logo along with the rest of the coaching staff will be announced at a later date.
When the league begins in 2010, It will be associated with up to 3 NBA teams, and will be able to fill the roster with second or third year players three times during the season. Frisco coach Nancy Lieberman, who is also an ESPN television analyst, will be the first woman to ever coach in D league basketball.
The D League sent more than 20 players to the NBA last year, and is noted as the biggest scouted league in the world, outside of the NBA. What this is going to bring to Frisco is enormous. The city is already getting bigger than ever, and put that with the Rough Riders and the Tornadoes, and we are talking traffic.
On a positive note, this will make the Mavericks even better, knowing that they have a minor basketball team at their disposal.
This will give NBA teams like the Mavericks a chance to monitor these players as they mature into young adults and into NBA stars. Several High School players have the opportunity to play in the D-league, since the rule says, you have to have had your 19Th birthday in order to play in the NBA.
Even though they wont get nearly as much money in the NBA,it is still an opportunity to be watched and coached by someone in the NBA, and likely a team one could be playing for.
