Painting is something that people think takes immense amounts of talent, but Jim Holloway, owner of Painting with a Twist is determined to prove those people wrong.
“We use art as entertainment,” Holloway said. “We make it fun and simple.”
Painting with a Twist is an art studio that caters to anyone and everyone. They allow guest to get online to see a schedule of what paintings are being done and they are able to reserve their spot for that class online. The paintings change daily and classes range from two to three hours depending on the difficulty of the painting. There is a painting to fit everyone’s taste from a guitar to a geisha girl with a fan. If someone doesn’t finish their painting the studio has open painting time once a month where anyone can come in and work on an unfinished piece and there will be an artist on hand to help.
Holloway has six artists that rotate teaching depending on the painting. There is also at least one teacher and one assistant per class.
“You are going to get one on one hands on treatment,” Holloway said.
He said most people never even attempt to paint because they don’t think they can but once they get a paint brush in their hand and experience it, they love it.
“You will absolutely be surprised what you can do,” Holloway said. All the people that come in and out have loved it and keep coming back. We have groupies.”
He wants the experience to be fun for everyone and encourages social interaction between all the painters. The studio is also BYOB and snacks can be brought too. He has three helpful hints that he tells everyone, “breath while you paint, don’t bite your tongue and once in awhile get up and walk away for few minutes.”
Painting is supposed to be fun for all ages. Holloway offers classes not onl
y to adults but children too. Every day during spring break there will be a child appropriate painting during the day. He will also close the studio for a birthday parties for children or adults of any age.
“The kids paint for an hour and the other hour is the birthday party,” he said. “The parents love it because the mess stays with us and the kids go home with something.”
When anyone pays for s class at Painting with a Twist includes all the materials they will need. The only thing they need to bring is something to drink and snack on and Holloway said messes are okay.
Since the store opened in January Holloway has seen a great response from the community and hopes to be able to open a second location in Plano at some point.
“It has just been phenomenal,” he said. “It is more than I ever expected this early in the game.”
