Riders and Missions Battle in Low-Scoring Game

Frisco and San Antonio battled in another low-scoring game as the RoughRiders defeated the Missions 4-2 on Sunday. Frisco starter Blake Beavan (2-4) earned his second win of the season, allowing just one run. On offense, Manny Pina hit his first home run since July 2.

Frisco struck first with a run in the first frame when Adam Fox hit an RBI single to score Johnny Whittleman. The RoughRiders made it 2-0 in the second inning when Pina connected for his eighth home run of the season. The Missions came within one at 2-1, but Frisco answered with two runs in the sixth inning when Guilder Rodriguez scored on an RBI triple by Marcus Lemon who then scored on an RBI single by Mitch Moreland to push the 'Riders lead to 4-1. San Antonio rallied, but the Frisco bullpen held on for the 4-2 win.

Beavan allowed one run on nine hits over six innings, striking out three and walking one. For Beavan, it was his first win since July 9 and second at Dr Pepper Ballpark. San Antonio starter Corey Kluber (1-2) took the loss, allowing two runs over five frames. Frisco's Clayton Hamilton notched his first save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Fox had a team-best three hits as Craig Gentry and Marcus Lemon each tripled. Whittleman had a game-high four walks. The RoughRiders have now won back-to-back games for the first time in over a week, but stay two games behind Midland for first place in the South Division.

The RoughRiders will look to take the series finale over the Missions on Monday with first pitch at 7 p.m. at Dr Pepper Ballpark.

Frisco Defeats Missions 2-1

The RoughRiders and Missions combined for just nine hits as Frisco defeated San Antonio 2-1 in a low scoring affair on Saturday at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Frisco starter Michael Kirkman (5-6) earned the win, allowing just one run on two hits over six frames. Johnny Whittleman had the only extra-base hit for the Frisco offense with an RBI double.

San Antonio struck first with a run in the second inning, but Frisco answered with a pair of runs in the fourth frame when Chad Tracy scored on a Whittleman double followed by an RBI single by Steve Murphy.

Kirkman turned in one of his best pitching performances of the season, allowing just one run over six frames. The Frisco bullpen pitched the final three innings, not allowing a run as Pedro Strop notched his third save with the RoughRiders. San Antonio starter Will Inman (5-2) allowed just two runs on three hits over six innings in the loss.

Offensively, only five RoughRiders recorded a hit as Whittleman had the best night with an RBI double, walk, and run scored. The Frisco defense also tied a season-best, turning four double plays on the night. Despite the win, the RoughRiders stay two games behind Midland in the South Division standings.

Frisco and San Antonio will play game three of the set Sunday at 6 p.m. at Dr Pepper Ballpark with the series tied at one game each.

 

Midland Comes Back to Beat Frisco

The ‘Hounds took the series over the RoughRiders, two games to one, defeating Frisco 10-9 on Thursday night with five runs in the ninth inning as Frisco committed six errors

The RoughRiders’ bullpen allowed six runs, including five in the ninth inning to fall to the RockHounds 10-9 on Thursday while the Famous Chicken watched, rooting on the ‘Riders. Chad Tracy collected a pair of hits, including a double, triple, and a pair of RBI. Adam Fox hit his second homer in as many nights to pull the RoughRiders within one run in the bottom of the ninth. The RoughRiders set a new franchise-high with six errors on the night, including three by Marcus Lemon, which ties a franchise-high for a single player.

Midland scored a pair of runs in the first frame on a two-run double by Matthew Spencer to take the 2-0 advantage. Frisco answered with five runs in the second inning when Chris Gradoville hit an RBI single and Steve Murphy scored on a ground out to knot the game at two. Gradoville came around to score on a force out followed by a bases-clearing triple by Tracy to give Frisco the 5-2 lead. Midland scored a run in the third inning, but Frisco answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning when Adam Fox scored on an error and Steve Murphy came home on a Dustin Majewski sacrifice fly. For the second night in a row, the RockHounds chipped away at the RoughRiders’ lead with a run in the fifth and eight innings. However on Thursday, the Midland bats were able to overcome Frisco’s bullpen, scoring five runs in the ninth inning to take the lead over the RoughRiders 10-7 in comeback-fashion. The ‘Riders mounted a comeback of their own as Fox hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth, but Frisco fell a run short.

Beavan allowed four runs on seven hits over six frames, walking two with no strikeouts, but didn’t factor into the decision. Pedro Strop (3-5) blew the save and took the loss for Frisco, allowing four runs on one hit and three walks over one inning. Midland reliever Steve Sharpe (6-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings as Jared Lansford earned his fifth save on the season and second of the series.

Tracy, Murphy, and Guilder Rodriguez each had a pair of hits as Tracy’s double and triple were the only extra-base hits on the night for Frisco. Lemon and Tracy hit collected two RBI as Fox and Murphy each scored two runs. Marcus Lemon set a new season-high with three errors on the night, which ties the franchise-mark for errors in a game. The six team errors was the most every in Frisco history.

The RoughRiders now begin a seven game road trip, beginning with four games in San Antonio. Frisco holds a half game lead over the RockHounds for first place in the South Division.

RoughRiders Use Big Innings Over Midland

Frisco tied a season-high with eight runs in one inning to defeat the RockHounds 9-8 on Wednesday at Dr Pepper Ballpark

The RoughRiders used an eight-run inning en route to the 9-8 victory over the RockHounds on Wednesday. Adam Fox and Chad Tracy each hit two-run home runs in an eight-run fifth frame as Frisco tied a season-high for runs in an inning. Frisco starter Michael Kirkman (4-5) allowed just three runs over seven frames to improve to 3-1 in the month of July. The RoughRiders (12) and RockHounds (12) combined for 24 hits on the night.

Midland jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Chris Carter. The RoughRiders then struck for eight runs in the fifth inning as Frisco sent 11 batters to the plate. After a Johnny Whittleman single, Adam Fox hit his 10th home run of the season, which is second on the team. Frisco tied the score at three when Manny Pina scored on a Marcus Lemon single and then took the lead on a two-run triple by Dustin Majewski, who then scored on an RBI single by Mitch Moreland. Frisco capped the inning on a two-run home run by Chad Tracy to give the RoughRiders an 8-3 advantage. The RoughRiders added another run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Guilder Rodriguez to plate Pina and make the score 9-3. Midland chipped away at the Frisco lead with a pair of runs in the eighth inning and three more in the ninth, but the RoughRiders bullpen held on for the 9-8 win.

Kirkman allowed three runs on seven hits over seven frames, striking out three and not walking a batter. Jose Diaz notched his team-best 10th save on the season for Frisco. Midland starter Justin Souza (0-1) allowed seven runs over just 4.1 innings for his first loss of the season.

Pina had a team-best three hits and scored a pair of runs as eight of Frisco’s nine batters in the line-up had at least one hit and one run scored. Majewski, Tracy, and Fox each collected two RBI as Tracy and Midland’s Carter both hit their 17th home runs on the season to tie them for second in the Texas League. Frisco now has 34 homers in the month of July which is double than their previous-high for a single month (17 – May).

The RoughRiders and RockHounds will play the rubber match on Thursday at Dr Pepper Ballpark with first pitch at 7 p.m. The Famous Chicken will perform at Thursday’s contest and Interstate Batteries will also be on-hand, creating a “winter” environment outside Dr Pepper Ballpark. Midland scored two runs over the final two innings as the Frisco bullpen couldn’t hold the lead

The RoughRiders led for most of the game until the RockHounds scored a run in the eighth and ninth frames to defeat Frisco 5-4 on Tuesday. With the win, Midland has moved within a half game of Frisco for first-place in the South Division. Frisco starter Kasey Kiker struck out seven over five frames, but didn’t factor into the decision. The RoughRiders’ Craig Gentry hit the first inside-the-park home run for Frisco in 2009.

The RoughRiders scored three in the first frame when Craig Gentry singled and scored on an RBI single by Chad Tracy and Dustin Majewski and Tracy came around to score on a Manny Pina single. The RockHounds tied the score in the second inning when the first two runners reached base and Josh Donaldson hit a three-run home run. Frisco regained the lead in the second frame when Craig Gentry hit his ninth home run of the season, an inside-the-park homer. The score would stay 4-3 until the eighth frame when Midland tied the score at four off Frisco reliever Pedro Strop who then allowed the go-ahead run in the ninth frame.

Kiker allowed just two hits over five innings, but gave up three runs on one swing. Strop (3-4) allowed two runs on five hits over 1.1 innings. Midland reliever Jon Hunton (3-3) earned the win with a scoreless inning of work out of the bullpen and Jared Lansford notched his fourth save.

Frisco out-hit Midland 11-8 as four RoughRiders had multi-hit games. Gentry scored a pair of runs and Marcus Lemon hit his third triple on the season.

The RoughRiders and RockHounds will match-up in game two of the series on Wednesday at Dr Pepper Ballpark with first pitch at 7 p.m.
