Frisco Discusses Building a Day Laborer Facility

A Day Labor Facility may be apart of Frisco’s future. If you have ever driven by the Café Depot Exxon station in downtown Frisco, you may have noticed several day laborers out loitering, waiting for a job.

At Thursdays’ Community Development Meeting the idea for a Downtown Labor Facility will be put on the table for discussion. Suburbs such as Plano, Allen, and Garland already have Day Labor Facilities put in place.

George Purefoy, the Frisco City Manager, told the CDC at it’s December meeting that there were several churches in the area that were willing to participate in a Day Labor Program, which would help the city avoid any legal matter. Many of the Day Laborers are illegal immigrants so if the city were to use tax dollars to build the building, there may be some legal issues to overcome.

If the City were to build the Center with Tax dollars they would be required to ask each patrons of their legal status, if one were to slip through the cracks, then the City would be in violation of federal law.

More discussion will take place at Thursdays meeting and we will have more to report at that time.

Cowboys Fall to Vikings 34-3

Sundays’ game held high hopes from Cowboys fans. With the Boys not having a playoff win in over 13 years, Tony Romo knew that he and his team had to deliver in the first round. After a demolishing win over the Philadelphia Eagles, a long time division rival, the Cowboys went into the second round with confidence and determination.

With Wade’s job on the line, Jason Garrett put together a score of offensive plays that were to insure a win over the Minnesota Vikings. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, Brett Favre was prepped and ready to play, arguably, one of his best post-season games in his long 19 year professional career.

The game opened up with a strong offensive move from Dallas, but was quickly over-run by the Minnesota defense. As the clock continued to tick, Minnesota swiftly made it known that they would not stand for the Dallas offense to push down the field. Most of the game was played in Cowboys territory, by both the Vikings and the Cowboys.

After a 47 yard field goal kick miss by Suisham, the Cowboys new kicking recruit, the Vikings from then on dominated the game. The Cowboys have struggled all year with field goal kicks. Nick Folk who has been on the team for a few years, struggled all year long, missing more than a dozen chip shot kicks. Towards the end of the season, Folk was replaced by Suisham, who was released from Washington just before he was picked up by Dallas. Regrettably, the replacement of Siusham over Folk did not prove to be a positive switch for the Cowboys.

By the fourth quarter with Minnesota carrying a two possession lead, Dallas appeared to have given up. Minnesota had shaken Romo’s confidence after six sacks and a few fumbled plays.

With four minutes left in regulation, Jerry Jones headed down to the sidelines. Unfortunately for Dallas fans, the game was already lost.

Minnesota will advance to the NFC Championship game next week against the New Orleans Saints, while the Cowboys will retire into yet another long off-season.

However, this season was not a disappointment, as the Dallas Cowboys did win their first playoff game in more than a decade. The win over Philadelphia gave Tony Romo his first career playoff win and hopefully gave Wade one more year to prove that he is the coach we all want him to be.

Collin County District Attorney Wants to Buy New Arms

  • PDF

In the wake of the Las Vegas Courthouse shooting, District Attorney John Roach, raises the idea of fitting his Emergency Response Team with new gear to help assist in an emergency. Mr. Roach has proposed that the county invest $25,000 from a drug forfeiture fund to purchase guns, helmets, shields, and other such equipment that would be of use in an emergency situation.

The team, which Roach formed in 2003, is made up of investigators that are all certified and licensed to carry an armed weapon. County Commissioners strongly disagree with Roach’s idea because they say another armed team is simply not necessary.

In the case of an emergency, Collin County has county bailiffs, sheriff’s deputies, Homeland Security officers, and McKinney Police all packing heat and all highly qualified and capable of responding in a timely manner.

The cash for the new weapons and gear does belong to the District Attorney’s office, and Roach may use it however sees it necessary. The county commissioners that are taking issue with Roach’s idea, question the legality and necessity of forming a new team. They simply do not want another team inside the courthouse bearing arms.

Roach’s point is that we are all on the same side. What harm would another team armed and trained in case of an emergency cause?  The team would be inside the building already, thus able to act much quicker than the other teams. Then once the suspect was apprehended, Roach’s team would step back and let the police force step in.

Still, the county commissioner does not want Roach spending the funds to further arm his team. But Roach is the chief law enforcer in the county – thus it is his call.
