Contrary to popular belief, Mother’s Day wasn’t fashioned by Hallmark. It may have begun with the annual Spring festival the Greeks dedicated to the mother of many deities, Rhea. Maybe it started with the offerings the Romans made to the Mother of Gods, Cybele. Perhaps it was the Christians celebrating Mary, the mother of Christ, the fourth Sunday in Lent. Or, even the English who took the Christians’ lead and expanded this day to include all mothers proclaiming it “Mothering Sunday.” We may not be able to pinpoint when and where Mother’s Day began, but we’ve had a cause to celebrate mothers for generations.
So, what are some creative things you can do to make your mom feel special this Mother’s Day? You can try making her breakfast, writing her a “101 reasons why she’s great” letter, or taking her to the movie of her choice at Stonebriar Mall or the Angelika. You can repair something in her home, play board games together, take her to one of Frisco’s beautiful parks for a picnic, or even bake her a cake. If you’re looking to treat mom to a tasty meal, some Frisco restaurants are offering Mother’s Day brunch including Blue Mesa Grill and Down Under Pub and Grub.
Mother’s Day is an occasion to say, “Thank you” for all the big (and little) things she’s done for you. Like the times she waited on you hand and foot while you were sick, for always meeting you at the door with a hug, or for teaching you to mind your manners. For delivering gifts from Santa long after you’d learned the dreary truth, for helping mend a broken heart, and for believing in your dreams when no one else did. Whatever you do for your mom this Mother’s Day, do it with a taste of the same love she’s so willingly given to you. Happy Mother’s Day!
