Collin County Pediatrics in Frisco Texas has been performing office based lead testing since December 2009. Dr. Jay Schwartz, Frisco pediatrician and owner at Collin County Pediatrics says, "When it became common knowledge that Frisco had an air pollution problem due to lead contamination, we began actively screening our patients for lead exposure. We expanded our lab capabilities to include in-office lead testing from a finger stick blood specimen that yields results in 3 minutes." Over a recent 3 month period his pediatric office has screened 194 children with the office based blood test. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers blood lead levels exceeding 10 mcg/dl to be hazardous and indicative of lead poisoning. Only 1 child of the 194 tested had a lead level over 10 mcg/dl. That particular child did not live near the Exide plant which has been the identified source of environmental lead emissions. The children in Dr. Schwartz’s practice that reside near the Exide Technologies plant did not have significantly elevated lead levels compared to children that live a few to several miles from the plant. "I’m glad that the lead screening we’ve done thus far has provided good evidence that this is not a widespread problem. It is reassuring to our parents that their children are healthy", says Dr. Schwartz. Collin County Pediatrics is located at 4461 Coit Rd, Suite 315 at Centennial Medical Center Pavilion I, on the Northside of Highway 121 in Frisco. Jay Schwartz, MD, FAAP founded his pediatric and adolescent medicine practice in 2007 and serves families in Frisco, Texas as well as from the surrounding cities of McKinney, Plano, Prosper, etc. Dr. Schwartz has been an expert speaker on the topics of pediatric asthma, ADD/ADHD and appropriate uses of antibiotics in children.
