15 PEOPLE TREATED FOR EXPOSURE TO CARBON MONOXIDE; FIRE INVESTIGATORS BLAME GAS LEAK
(October 8, 2011) Frisco firefighters say 15 people were transported to local hospitals to be treated for exposure to carbon monoxide after a vent pipe from a water heater became disconnected at a Frisco hair salon.
Dispatchers received a 911 call from Salon Boutique, 2693 Preston Rd., Suite 1080, at approximately 3:43 p.m. The caller reported several salon customers were complaining of headaches and dizziness. When firefighters arrived, they evacuated at least 50 people from the salon and neighboring businesses.
“Carbon monoxide can be very dangerous, even deadly,” said Frisco Battalion Chief Shaw Eft. “Fortunately, the salon managers recognized there was a problem when several customers complained of headaches, nausea and dizziness; and they called for help.”
Firefighters treated patients at the scene with oxygen. Gas to the water heater has been shut off pending repairs. Businesses are expected to reopen later this evening.
Salon Boutique is located in a shopping strip east of Stonebriar Centre Mall.
Approximately 10 Frisco fire units responded including special ops and hazmat. Frisco Police also assisted.\
