When you are from somewhere else you always end up comparing where you are now with where you were then and often there are a few things that you find lacking. One of those things for me here in Frisco is the night sky. I have never lived so close to a major metropolitan area before so I had no idea that the night sky pretty much turns to black this close.
Oh, there are a few stars to be seen for sure. But nothing compared to our old country home and Frisco cannot even come close to the little country roads we used to find up north when we really wanted a good view of the night sky’s happenings.
I miss that a lot. I miss how small it made me feel to look up and see millions of twinkling stars shining down on me. It kind of kept the old ego in check to realize that chances are there is something else out there bigger than little ‘ole me.
I miss it when there is an announcement of some astronomical event and we can’t even get a glimpse of it. I miss the shooting stars. I miss wishing on that first star while trying not to look at any of the other ones.
It is so true that you never know what you have until it’s gone and I often find myself looking up at a full moon and wondering if this is all I will ever see of the night sky again.
Then I heard about the Texas Astronomical Society. They actually meet here in Frisco under the guise of the Frisco Star Fest! Ah, what a wonderful solution. If I can’t see what the night sky has to offer with my own eyes perhaps adding a bit of help in the form of a telescope would make up for it.
The Frisco Star Fest is held every 2nd Saturday of the month, weather permitting. You can find the current meeting location at their website www.friscostarfest.com
or www.texasastro.org
. Rumor has it that these are a great group of folks who are not only intelligent about their hobby but generous in allowing you to share a peek at the stars with their equipment. I also heard they don’t mind the occasional child taggin’ along to see what’s going on up there.
