Recalling Fair in the Square

If you wanted a turkey leg the size of small child you could have found it at Fair in the Square. Fair in the Square is a robust name for a traveling county fair that took roots in Frisco April 22-26. After reading the advertisements for the event, I excitedly pulled on my “riding gear” in anticipation of the hours of entertainment awaiting me. I drove the few miles from my house and found a parking place within ten feet of the ticket booth believing I had hit the parking jackpot. That is, until I noticed three others next to it.  One glimpse at the Carnival told me that Fair in the Square had over-sold its size. Undeterred, I bound forward with my optimism in tact. I believed a fair could still be fun even if you clearly didn’t need to ride the Ferris Wheel to view the entire spread. This theory proved true by the end of my stay and while the event wasn’t what was expected, it still managed to produce one great afternoon. A smoking grill stirred enough hunger to make you reach for your wallet and the consumption of freshly-spun cotton candy, warm caramel-dipped apples, and fluffy funnel cakes kept the kids hopping from one ride to the next like a rabbit on Red Bull. The Sizzler spun unmercifully taking your equilibrium hostage, the Tilt-a-Whirl delivered enough G-force to make you laugh like a lunatic, and the Haunted Coaster left you wondering if the creepy masked-man was going to be waiting under your bed that night. In the end, Fair in the Square did what most fairs do successfully; it left adults fondly reminiscing about attending county fair growing up and children creating new, cheerful memories. I left Fair in the Square down $30, up a tiny stuffed monkey, and knowing that I’d be back next year.
