Frisco police are investigating a scam involving counterfeit ‘City of Frisco’ checks.
Four individuals, two from in state and two from out of state, have contacted the Frisco Police Department because they have recieved 'suspicious' checks from the City of Frisco.
The checks bear the City of Frisco name, routing and account numbers but other parts of the checks are different.
"The City of Frisco is just being used as a pawn," Sergeant Adam Henderson of the Frisco Police Department said.
He explained that the checks were all recieved through the mail along with a letter from a company asking the people if they wanted to be secret shoppers. The letter instructed the reciever to cash the the check, the reciever could keep $250 for agreeing to a secret shopper, there was a $200 handeling fee and the rest of the money was to be transfered through Western Union. All of the checks were for $3500 each.
He said the police department has a detective investigating the crime as Fraudulent use of Identifying Information. It is a felony charge for each check and if the receiving parties would have cashed the checks they too would be charged.
"We will exhaust every resource we have," Henderson said.
Police advise anyone who receives a ‘suspicious’ check from the ‘City of Frisco’ to contact their local law enforcement agency.| < Prev | Next > |
