With the birth of a new decade, D Magazine thought to mark 35 of the greatest moments in Dallas/Fort Worth History. There have been hundreds of little moments here and there that have made our metropolis what it is today, but the 35 most important in our modern history have been outlined in this months’ edition of the magazine.
Among the top moments named, was the explosion of Frisco. As was mentioned in the article “Ten years of Frisco”, the uniqueness of Frisco’s quick growth and expansion is like no other one horse town in the history of the area. For a city to expand from 3,000 residents to 107,000 residents in just less than 20 years is almost unheard of. Frisco has been named as one of the fastest growing suburbs in the United States.
For the D Magazine article, each of the top 35 greatest moments in Dallas history, an author was chosen to write a blurb. The author chosen to expound on the explosion of Frisco is a man whose heart is closest to the city of Frisco. He knows her inner workings and how she became what she is today. And he had a large hand in raising her and watching her grow. George Purefoy was Frisco’s very first city manager and was chosen for the office back in 1987, when Frisco was small town of only a few thousand residents.
Mr. Purefoy was asked by D Magazine to share his thoughts on the growth of Frisco and what changes were put in place to lead her to where she is now. In the article, Purefoy outlines a few major milestones that took Frisco from a small town to a big bustling city.
The first point was the development of Plantation Resort in the 1990’s, then the addition of Collin County Community Colleges Preston Ridge Campus in 1995, and of course, the building of Stonebriar Mall in 2000. Frisco was growing in the 90’s, but the opening of Stonebriar seemed to be the exact push that the city needed to grow into the massive retail and residential mecca that we know today.
