Riders fall to Arkansas Travelers

  • PDF
A two-out RBI double by the Travelers Clay Fuller broke a scoreless tie
in the seventh inning and the 'Riders continued to struggle on offense,
falling to Arkansas, 1-0, on Monday night.

Martin Perez started for the 'Riders, pitching 4.2 innings of shut-out
baseball. He gave up two hits and walked three while striking out two
batters. Perez held a no-hitter going into the fifth inning.

The 'Riders had another chance for some late inning heroics, as the club
loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. However,
Matt Lawson struck out against Ismael Carmona to end its best scoring
threat.

Frisco will try to avoid the sweep on Tuesday morning, when it sends RHP
Blake Beavan (1-0, 1.50) to the mound against RHP Tim Kiely (0-0, 0.00).
First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM.

Tornadoes loose three against St. Louis

  • PDF
Even though the Tornadoes have clinched a playoff spot, they need to play every game like its their last.  On Friday night, the Tornadoes came into a weekend where they have been dominating on crashing the net, and playing strong defense.  They were out shot 33-15 and could not score on 4 power play opportunities.  They lost that match up 5-0, and four of those goals were scored in the third period by St Louis.  On Saturday night they did show a little more effort and crashed the net more effectively.  Tyler Underhill started off the scoring for Texas in the First period, but the second period was all St. Louis as they scored the next three, and went on to win 5-2.  On Sunday, things did not appear to get any better as they lost their third straight game 4-2.   Jack Prince and Tyler Underhill scored for the Tornadoes in the loss.   The problem seems to be the missed power play opportunities.  In the losses, they were 1-17 in the power play so that is the one thing that should be addressed.   On Saturday night, they had eight chances on the power play and came up empty.  Goalie Dan Sullivan is doing everything in his power to stop those pucks, but he sees alot of them, and one is bound to go in.  He stopped 71 in the combined three games.  Hopefully they can go into the playoffs with some momentum.   They will be closing out the season with  a rematch with St. Louis this weekend, who only trails Topeka by two points in the South division.  This will be a good chance for them to enter the playoffs with some momentum and on a winning streak.

Texas D-League Management, LLC, has purchased the Colorado 14ers and will relocate the team to Frisco, Texas, it was announced today by NBA Development League President Dan Reed.  The team will begin play in Frisco at the Dr. Pepper Arena for the 2010-11 season, but will not play during 2009-10 in order to transition.

Donnie Nelson, Dallas Mavericks President of Basketball Operations and General Manager, will be the principal owner and operator of the team. Nelson brings 23 years of NBA experience with him to the team in Frisco, including 11 years in Dallas' front office, along with coaching stints with the Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, and
Phoenix Suns.   Nelson's ownership group includes Evan Wyly, a Dallas native and the Chairman of Green Mountain Energy, the nation's leading provider of cleaner electricity and carbon offset solutions.  Colorado 14ers owner Tim Wiens will retain a minority ownership stake in the team.  Nelson, Wyly and Frisco Mayor Maher Maso joined Reed at today's announcement, which was held at the Mavericks' practice facility located inside American Airlines Center.

"We're very excited to be in Frisco, an area with deep fan support and a history of successful sports teams," said Reed.  "We're thrilled to welcome such a well-respected and experienced group to the NBA D-League ownership ranks.  Not only are Donnie Nelson's basketball credentials terrific, but he has assembled a group with impressive business credentials as well.  Donnie's investment in an NBA D-League team is a great validation of both our league's past success and future growth prospects."

The Frisco team's new name, colors and logo, along with the coaching staff, will be announced at a later date.

"Texas is one of the hottest basketball markets in the world. We plan to bring an exciting, high octane brand of basketball that's both affordable and fun for the entire family," said Nelson.  "Our team will have a chance to hone their skills in the newly renovated Dr. Pepper center in Frisco. The NBA D-League continues to provide high level competition and excellent opportunities for both its fans and players."

When the team begins play in 2010, it will be directly affiliated with up to three NBA teams, which will be able to assign first and second year players to the club up to three times during a season.

The NBA Development League, founded in 2001, is the NBA's official minor league and featured 16 teams with direct affiliations to NBA teams during the 2008-09 season.  This Fall, two new NBA D-League teams will begin play in Portland, Maine and Springfield, Mass.-- the birthplace of basketball. Eighty-four former NBA Development League players were on 2008-09 NBA end-of-season rosters, amounting to almost 20 percent of NBA players, and the league continues to develop coaches, referees, and front office staff for the NBA and its teams.  In fostering the league's connection to the community, its teams, players and staff promote health and wellness, support local needs and interests, and assist in educational development through NBA D-League Cares programs.  The NBA D-League also advances the game of basketball as the research and development arm of the NBA.
Throughout the season fans can watch all NBA D-League games on NBA Futurecast, the free live Web-streaming initiative found at

Friday, the deal was announced & will move the California native & Texas resident from the FC Dallas developmental program he joined, when he left Spain's Atletico Madrid under-16 squad in 2009.  Sanchez will still have two more years of eligibility left in the Development Academy to give him extra game experience while behind the logjam of goalkeepers in Frisco, TX.  He was recently selected the top goalkeeper at the Universidad Catolica tournament in Chile while playing for the Mexican national youth team.

This week, Sanchez will join Dallas in Orlando, Fla. then will return to the Mexican team on March 6th as part of the preparations for this year's FIFA Under-17 World Cup.  Richard Sanchez is the sixth FC Dallas player signed from its youth program.

"FC Dallas is excited to add Richard Sanchez as our next Home Grown player," FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman said. "I think he is by far the best goalkeeper I have ever seen at this age level, and he’s shown that during his time as a goalkeeper for Mexico’s Under-17 National Team. Being in first team training with Drew Keeshan and absorbing everything he can from a veteran like Kevin Hartman is going to be the best thing that could happen for Richard’s career."
