Frisco Student Athletes Bring Home Championships

Across the district Frisco students are showing they are champions.

The boys wrestling team from Centennial High School claimed its second straight state championship during the Wrestling State Tournament, held February 20-21 at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.

The boys team from Liberty High School placed 5th overall while the boys team from Wakeland High School placed 8th overall.

Three students, including Devin McCord and Spencer Schoen of Centennial and Marsela Gaisoa of Lone Star High School, won individual state titles in their respective weight classes, with many more students placing in the top three in 5A competition.

Centennial Coach Jake Jackson was again named Boys State Wrestling Coach of the Year.

Meanwhile, Frisco ISD also had a tremendous showing at the Swimming & Diving State Meet, held February 20-21 at the Texas Swim Center in Austin.

The boys team from Wakeland was the 5A state runner-up, finishing just 2.5 points behind the first place finisher.

The boys team from Frisco High School finished 4th overall, while the girls from Frisco High came in 5th overall.

Wakeland swimmers Jacob DeMercurio and Sam Kline claimed two state titles each in their respective events, and Liberty diver Matthew Phillip was the state champion in 1 mtr Diving.

Coach Melissa Soileau was named Girls State Diving Coach of the Year.

A total of 34 students represented FISD in the Wrestling State Tournament, while 20 swimmers and divers qualified for state in individual events.
