Today The Texas League named Joey Gallo its Player of the Week and Frank Lopez its Pitcher of the Week for May 18-24. This is the first time in 2015 that a RoughRiders player has received either honor. The Riders went 4-2 in six games over that span.
Gallo was 9-for-24 (.375) with three home runs, eight RBI and five runs scored over that time. One of his three home runs was an inside-the-park home run, the first of his four-year career. Ranked by MLB.com as the Texas Rangers’ number one prospect, Gallo entered May 25 hitting .337 with seven home runs, 23 RBIs and 17 runs scored on the season. The 21-year old holds a team-high 18 extra base hits and his .441 on-base percentage is fourth in the Texas League.
Lopez was promoted to Frisco from Advanced-A High Desert on Saturday, May 23 and made his Double-A debut for the club on the next day against San Antonio. The left-hander hurled 6 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed just two hits in the winning effort. He struck out five and walked one. Including his time with High Desert, Lopez has now worked into the seventh inning in four of his eight starts in 2015.
The RoughRiders return to Dr Pepper Ballpark on Tuesday, May 26 to begin a six-game home stand against the Springfield Cardinals and Tulsa Drillers.
