The Texas Rangers announced today the club’s minor league award winners for May. Third baseman Joey Gallo was named Player of the Month, and left-handed pitcher Frank Lopez was named Pitcher of the Month. Both players were named the Texas League Players of the Week for May 18-24.
Gallo, 21, batted .313 (30-96) with seven doubles, nine home runs, 27 RBI, 23 walks, and 19 runs over 28 games in May with the Frisco RoughRiders. The slugger’s final game with Frisco came on May 30, when he knocked a three-run blast to help Frisco win 6-2 against the Tulsa Drillers. At the time of his promotion to the big leagues on June 1, Gallo ranked seventh in the Texas League in batting average, third in home runs, fourth in RBI, fifth in on-base percentage, second in slugging percentage and first in HR/AB ratio (1/13.44).
Lopez, 21, combined to go 3-0 with a 1.36 ERA and 35 strikeouts over five starts with Advanced-A High Desert and Double-A Frisco. The southpaw held opponents to a .174 average with just seven walks during the month. Lopez recorded a career-best 10 strikeouts in his final start with the Mavericks on May 18. In two May starts with the Riders, Lopez tossed 13 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out 12. He made his Double-A debut with the Riders on May 24, earning the win against San Antonio.
Additionally, shortstop Luis Marte was named Defender of the Month, and left-hander Yohander Mendez was named Reliever of the Month.
